The Basic Tarot is a German deck created by artist and writer Gudrun Dobratz. This deck projects a modern, urban sensibility through Dobratz's use of mixed-media, color and energetic brush strokes. The card images have a rectangular central section in color on a brown background. German card names are incorporated into the image and printed with English translations. The minor arcana cards are color-coded by suit: wands (red), cups (green), swords (blue) and coins (brown). Each court card rank is consistent in style: page (photo), knight (profile), queen (full face) and king (line drawing). In the instruction booklet, Dobratz describes the relationship between the tarot and the Tree of Life from the Kabbalah.
