Buckland Romani Tarot
Raymond Buckland is Romani on his father's side. He remembers hearing tales as a child of the colorful Gypsy way of life. In the Romani Tarot, Buckland worked with artist Lissanne Lake to produce vivid images of the Gypsies as he experienced them in England before and after World War II. The cards are based on the Rider-Waite model, but adapted to capture the flavor of Romani culture. For example, the Magician is female because woman were more often the "wise ones." The major arcana or boro lil show the card numbers, but not names. The suits of the minor arcana (tarno lil) are the wheel, cup, stave and and knife. The Romani Tarot only comes as a deck/book set with The Buckland Romani Tarot: The Gypsy Book of Wisdom (239 pages). Buckland is also part author of the Book of African Divination.
